Lausanne’s water: soft to moderately hard

From 14 to 19 °fH depending on the source, measured in 2025.

Lausanne’s water comes mainly from Lake Geneva, topped up by Lac de Bret and by springs, including those of the Pays-d’Enhaut. In 2025, the city’s water service measured 14 °fH (French degrees of hardness) for the Pays-d’Enhaut spring water, 15 °fH at Bret, 16 °fH for lake water supplied from the Montétan reservoir, and up to 19 °fH at La Croix-sur-Lutry. That is far less limescale than in the Gruyère or the Broye. At this level, the city does not recommend softening cold drinking water.

Limescale still builds up where the water is heated, over the years: in the tank and on the element of the water heater, then in tap aerators and mixer cartridges. A water heater that takes longer to heat up, or that whistles, is often the first sign. Water heater descaling can be booked in Lausanne at the same fixed price as elsewhere, as can replacing a mixer tap or a trap.

The drive to Lausanne, stated upfront

Lausanne is about three quarters of an hour from our base in the Gibloux. The price of every service includes a set number of kilometres by road, and Lausanne lies beyond them: allow around fifty francs of travel in the centre, more towards the west, up to about 80 francs in Ecublens. The table gives the amount for each town, and the booking calculates it for your exact address and shows it before you pay. Nothing is added after the job.

Common questions in Lausanne

I live in a flat: who books?

A tap or a trap in your own home, you can book yourself. For anything that concerns the building, a riser pipe or a leak that reaches the neighbours, it is normally the property manager or the owner who gives the instruction: pass this page on to them, the price and the travel cost are known in advance.

What temperature should my water heater be set to?

The City of Lausanne recommends at least 60 °C, to limit the risk of legionella. Any higher and limescale builds up faster: 60 °C remains the right setting for most water heaters. If yours no longer holds its temperature, the technician checks it during descaling.

Is water damage covered by the ECA?

No: in the canton of Vaud, the law excludes burst pipes and water seepage from the cantonal building insurance. It is the building’s water damage insurance, with a private insurer, that pays out, depending on the policy. Do you come as far as Morges?

Yes, every service can be booked there too, with a travel cost of around 90 francs.
