Water heater descaling and servicing in Lausanne and Montreux

Less hot water than before, an electricity bill that rises for no reason, a unit that cracks or whistles as it heats: it is limescale. Descaling restores your water heater (the “boiler”, as it is called in French-speaking Switzerland) to good working order and extends its life by several years.

Why a water heater needs servicing

Limescale settles on the heating element and at the bottom of the tank. The element then has to heat for longer for the same volume of water: consumption goes up, the supply of hot water shrinks, and the element eventually fails. The anode, for its part, wears away to protect the tank from corrosion. Once it is used up, the tank itself starts to corrode, and a tank that has rusted through has to be replaced entirely.

Descaling costs a fraction of the price of a new unit. It is the one piece of maintenance that really decides how long a water heater lasts.

What is included

  • Travel within 40 km there and back.
  • Shutting the unit down, draining it and opening the tank.
  • Removing the limescale and cleaning the tank.
  • Checking the heating element, the anode and the seals.
  • Refilling, a leak test and putting the unit back into service.

What is not included

  • Parts: anode, seals, heating element, thermostat. Any part that needs replacing is shown to you and priced before it is fitted.
  • Replacing the unit, if its condition no longer justifies servicing.
  • Plumbing work around the unit, if it turns out to be necessary.

Choosing the right capacity

The price depends on the volume of the tank, because draining and cleaning take longer as it gets bigger. The capacity is written on the unit’s rating plate, usually on the side or underneath: look for a figure in litres. If the plate cannot be read, photograph the whole unit when you book and we will tell you which band to choose.

Frequently asked questions

Are a “boiler” and a water heater the same thing?

Yes. In French-speaking Switzerland, “boiler” is the everyday word for a storage water heater, the kind that keeps a supply of hot water in a tank. It has nothing to do with central heating: this page is about that hot water tank.

How often should it be descaled?

It depends on how hard the water is and how much it is used. With hard water, a check every three to five years is reasonable. The first descaling tells us a lot: depending on how thick the deposit is, we tell you the right interval for your installation.

How long is the hot water off?

For the duration of the visit, plus the time it takes to heat back up, which depends on the volume of the tank. Allow half a day to get a full tank of hot water again.
