Payerne’s water is very hard

44.4 °fH at the last published test, in July 2025: very hard water.

Since 1990, the measurements published by the municipality have ranged from 35.6 to 45 °fH (French degrees of hardness): Payerne’s water has always been hard. Nearly three quarters of it comes from groundwater pumped at the La Vernaz well, in Corcelles, and the rest from spring catchments. Water this hard is perfectly safe to drink, but it leaves deposits quickly wherever it is heated and wherever it stands still.

In the Broye, the water heater is the first to suffer: the heating element scales up, the unit uses more electricity and gives less hot water. Next come clogged tap aerators and mixer tap cartridges that stiffen. Water heater descaling can be booked in Payerne at the same fixed price as in Fribourg, as can the replacement of a mixer tap.

In Vaud, but within our local area

Payerne is in the canton of Vaud, our base in the canton of Fribourg: the cantonal border makes no difference. The area is measured in driving time, and the Broye is about half an hour away, from Avenches and Domdidier to Lucens and Estavayer-le-Lac. Every service can be booked there, travel included.

Common questions in Payerne

How often should a water heater be descaled in Payerne?

There is no single rule: it all depends on the temperature setting, how much hot water you use and the age of the unit. With water above 40 °fH, a water heater scales up much faster than in Châtel-Saint-Denis or Romont. Hot water that runs out sooner than it used to, or a water heater that whistles, are the signs that it is time.

Is travel charged in the Broye?

No, for every place in the table: from Payerne to Estavayer-le-Lac, the journey stays within the kilometres included in the price. For an address off the beaten track, the answer and the full price appear as soon as you enter it, before any payment.
