What a booster pump does

It keeps the water pressure high enough where the mains do not provide enough: a house on high ground, a supply from a well or a tank, a long supply pipe, the upper floor of a building. The unit combines a pump, an expansion vessel and a pressure switch. The fault often lies in one of the three, not necessarily the pump.

Signs that a booster pump is reaching the end of its life

• The pressure varies for no reason, or drops as soon as a second tap or outlet is opened.
• The unit starts and stops in short, jerky bursts.
• It runs continuously and never switches off.
• New noise or vibration in the plant room.
• A leak at the unit or at its connections.

The booster pump is not always the cause

Low pressure can come from elsewhere: a pressure reducer that is out of adjustment, a clogged filter, an expansion vessel that has lost its pre-charge, a scaled-up pipe whose diameter has narrowed, or a leak in the system that keeps the pressure falling.

Replacing the unit without checking these points means risking the same symptom the following week. If the trail leads elsewhere (scaled-up pipework, a hidden leak), we point you to the job that really solves the problem.
